Wadi Rum at First Light

Four dawns in a Bedouin camp, learning how fast red rock changes its mind about color.

The brief

Silence you can photograph

Wadi Rum rewards the early. By 9am the dunes are tracked over and the light goes flat and white; at 5:30am the whole valley is rose-gold and yours alone. My guide, Salem, knew exactly which dune crest would catch the first ray each morning.

We drove out in the dark, climbed by headlamp, and waited. The desert does the rest — wind combing the sand into perfect ripples, footprints from the night’s foxes stitching dotted lines across them.
