High Pastures of the Andes
Horseback routes above 4,000 meters with herders, dogs and skies that change every ten minutes.
The brief
Thin air, thick skies
The Cordillera Blanca doesn’t pose. Clouds stack up against 6,000-meter walls by noon, hail rattles down by two, and by four the light turns to honey. You ride through all of it, camera wrapped in a poncho, hoping the break comes when the horses are still.
I joined two herder brothers moving stock between high pastures over six days. They set the pace, chose the camps, and laughed — kindly — at my altitude. Every frame in this series was negotiated with weather, not directed.
